This month we’re looking inside our pre-sizing department with Pre-Sizer Manager Sean McCaig, Sean’s been with Adrian Scripps for over twenty years!
All our apples go through the pre-sizing machine to be graded and sorted in to different categories, such as weight and quality, the machine processes 13,000 tons of apples, which is about 108 million apples per year!
Fruit is transported through the machine in water channels, letting the apples float like this protects the them from bumps, bruising and any damage that could be caused by too much handling. We’re extremely careful with our apples, so much so that we even have ‘gently please’ printed on to the side of our bins.
When each apple passes through the machine, its photographed around 20 times which means we’re taking around 2.2 billion photos of our apples every year! Photos are taken to check the quality, and it helps us to identify any blemishes on the fruit. We’re proud of the apples we grow at Adrian Scripps, and only want the best going to our customers, this amazing piece of technology ensures that every apple is in great condition.
The pre-sizing machine then separates the fruit in to pre-determined categories, and the apples are held in separate channels until the machine is ready to collect them and they can be transported to the packing department ready to be packaged and sent off to stores all around the UK.
Next month we’ll be continuing our journey, and heading over the packaging department to meet Tzvet Zlatev, our packhouse manager to see what happens to our apples next!
